Support native pollinators
Looking for ways to support native pollinators in your area? There are many ways to do your part to help our butterflies, birds, bees, beetles, flies, bats, and all other pollinators!
1. Become a Pollinator Champion
Take our free online course to become a Pollinator Champion, become a Certified Pollinator Champion, and give a talk on pollinators in your area.
2. Plant native plants!
Plant the species that pollinators depend on. It is crucial to ensure the plants are native to your area; consider the host and nectar plants pollinators depend on. Use the Michigan native plant and seed producer directory to find plants and seeds near you. Read more on our planting for pollinator page.
3. Be conscious of invasive species
Invasive species are non-native plants or animals that can harm the ecosystem in many ways, including outcompeting other species and impacting water quality. In many cases, it is easier to prevent invasive species introduction into an area rather than eradicate it once established. The Nature Conservancy tips on how to prevent invasive species from spreading. For additional information, read Take action against invasive species by the National Invasive Species Information Center.
4. Be conscious of pesticide use
Pesticide use can have harmful consequences for pollinators in the area. Learn ways for minimizing pesticide exposure to pollinators and understand the risks of pesticides to pollinators. Some studies have even found insecticides to be the primary driver of butterfly decline.
5. Become a community scientist
There are many community science projects that rely on outside contributions to help monitor and study pollinators.
6. Advocate for pollinators
Support pollinator policy through advocacy and spread awareness for pollinator support.
7. Support conservation efforts
Many organizations have conservation efforts for specific pollinators to ensure their survival, including the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s Center for Pollination Conservation. There are many ways to support these organizations, such as donations, advocacy, and volunteering.
8. Donate
Donate to the Michigan Pollinator Initiative so we can continue our work helping pollinators.
